Amethyst is a quartz variety of magmatic and hydrothermal origin. Most amethyst deposits are in Brazil and Uruguay, where the approximate date is 160 million years. Its purple color is due to the iron oxide content and exposure to high temperatures during its formation.
The name amethyst derives from the Greek"amethostos"which means"not to drink". In ancient Greece it was believed that this stone protected against drunkenness. Amethyst is one of the first gemstones used in ancient times as a gem and a symbol of wealth and power. It has also traditionally been associated with purity and spirituality, as evidenced by some ancient ornaments, jewelry, and utensils from India, Tibet, or the early Christian church.
